Jimmy Styks Stand Up Paddle Board 10'6"

The Jimmy Styks 106 stand up paddle board represents a nice looking, functional, and smaller SUP at a great price. While its totally suitable for the surf, its not really a hard-core surf-centric shape. This board is more for flat water paddling and the occasional surf session in smaller waves.

JimmyStyks stand up paddle boards are made in a very similar fashion to traditional single stringer surfboards, except they use EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam cores instead of PU (polyurethane) foam cores.

The trade-off of using an EPS foam core
EPS foam is called expanded polystyrene, and its really a bunch of foam beads pressed together. Its not exactly a solid material, and thus if it gets wet it absorbs water rather quickly. Polyurethane (PU) foam also absorbs water, but much more slowly. The take away is that its very important to keep the EPS foam core of a stand up paddle board (or an EPS constructed surfboard, as many are made today with EPS foam) dry. This is why many stand up paddle boards on the market use a number of schemes to put a very durable protective skin over this inner foam core. Using a wood veneer sandwiched by multiple layers of epoxy glassing is a popular construction method. Its also a more expensive construction method. JimmyStyks boards (and many other SUP boards on the market) use just a few stacked layers of glassing to save costs. Its not necessarily a bad thing its just a trade off of durability versus production cost. Nonetheless, as a consumer you need to understand that this type of board is easier to damage and youre more likely to get into a situation where the inner foam core is exposed to water, which will require a prompt and professional repair (involving the sucking out of that water). If not, your 30 lb board will quickly weigh 35 lbs or 40 lbs or more and the damage may be irreversible. So be diligent if you go with a board constructed of just a glassed over EPS foam core.

Another primary differences between a high-end construction EPS board and a low-end construction EPS board is that the low-end boards will tend to install inserts such as fin boxes and leash plugs directly into the EPS foam core (instead of into strength-reinforcing high-density foam blocks). Again, this isnt necessarily a bad thing, its just a trade-off of durability versus production cost.

During construction of a JimmyStyks board, an EPS foam core is precisely shaped on a CNC machine. Its a precise shape, but a rough finish. The finish of the board is made smooth with a quick hand sanding. The next step is that three layers of 6 oz epoxy glassing are applied to the top deck and two layers of epoxy glassing are applied to the bottom deck. Next the board is airbrushed and the artwork is applied over a fully cured hot coat. The stand up paddle board is finished with an epoxy glass paint coat that is applied to the outside of the board and polished to produce a durable car paint like finish.
