Stand up paddle boarding, also know as SUPing, is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. Originating in Hawaii in the 1960’s, SUPing made a name for itself in the 1990’s thanks to surfer Laird Hamilton who helped to establish it as a true sport.
Since the 90’s, SUPers have found several awesome spots the get optimal paddle boarding action. Here is a fun list we’ve put together with a convenient road map to plan your best summer vacay.
7 Stops on Your SUPer Road Trip
Seattle, WA – If you haven’t been to Seattle before, you may be surprised to learn that the city is actually built around the Puget Sound. When you are in the harbor of the Sound, you are actually surrounded by the city and the view is amazing. Plus, Seattle is a city packed full of awesomeness. From the fish market to the clubs and everything in between, there is something for everyone in this coastal metropolis. A word to the wise- for the best weather and to capitalize on the city’s beauty, visit between June and August when the sun shines nearly every day and Mount Rainier is in plain sight. You won’t regret it!
Hood River, OR – Hood River is a favorite SUP location for paddle boarders and water enthusiasts of all experience levels. Also offering amazing whitewater for rafters, this is a picturesque community that draws water lovers all year long. There are multiple campsites, equipment rentals, and old fashion lake town entertainment aplenty.
Redondo Beach, CA –With a beautiful beach and optimal waters, Redondo Beach draws SUPers and surfers alike. Enjoy the water all day and seek out a local beach that allows bonfires for fun all night. This won’t disappoint!
Peoria, AZ – Located on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe, staying on the Arizona side of the lake offers a bit more affordability to this well sought-after lake. There are also plenty of lodging, restaurants, and equipment rentals to choose from so that you can make the most of your experience.
Vail, CO – Imagine being surrounded by the Rocky Mountains while you paddle out to the middle of the lake. Vail is loved for water sports in the summer and skiing in the winter. This tourist city has something for every outdoor enthusiast, whether you want to stick to SUPing or try something new.
Austin, TX – What could be better than enjoying the water while being in the home of live music? By the way, even though it’s Texas, if country music isn’t your thing, you don’t have to worry. Austin is the live music capital of the world, and they offer EVERY genre of music.
The Colorado river happens to run right through the city and the river banks are full of restaurants with live music playing every night. Grab some awesome food, get the best margaritas you’ve ever tasted, and enjoy some great time on the water while you’re at it.
Key West, FL – The southeastern corner of the US, the Florida Keys are known for their gentle, clear waters and beautiful sea life. The waters are so still here that even beginners can enjoy hours on the water without getting worn out.
