July 14th is National Nude Day and we figured what better way to celebrate than to give you the ultimate guide to America’s most fabulous nude beaches. Naturalists, rejoice! We’ve rounded up the top 10 spots to bare it all.
10.) Pirate’s Cove, San Luis Obispo, CA
Pirate’s Cove is a quarter mile long cove situated along the coast in central California between San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach. It’s known for being one of the most beautiful nude beach settings in the states. Sunbathing is the main activity, which has been know to attract crowds up to 200 people a day - mostly nude, some clothed and a little in between. This beach is also about 10% families, if that’s your thing. Be sure not to confuse this beach with the Pirate’s Cove in Los Angeles - you may get some funny looks taking your clothes off there. ;)
9.) Hippie Hollow, Travis Lake, TX
Located just outside of Austin, this nude-friendly lakeside beach is a super casual and fun go-to for locals and tourists alike. It’s also Texas’s only clothing optional park, so be sure to claim a spot early in the day if you’re planning to scope it out. Things to be aware of: there is a super rocky shoreline (another reason to get there early!) and it costs $15 to get in for the day. Hippie Hollow is for ages 18+, so leave the kiddos at home for this trip.
8.) UFO Beach, South Padre, TX
The only way to deal with the Texas heat is by stripping down! The number 8 spot goes to another Texas beach, but be aware that UFO Beach is not an officially recognized nude beach. To find this beach, head about 10 miles north of Beach Access 6 and keep your eyes peeled for the giant UFO-looking structure that is appropriately tagged with “nude beach”. Other than Spring Break weeks, this beach tends to be pretty quiet and empty, and passersby are generally friendly and uninterested in those going sans clothing.
7.) Collins Beach, Sauvie Island, OR
Popular for nude activities since the early 1970s, Collins Beach on Sauvie Island is a hotspot for hipsters in nearby Portland. The clothing optional area is surrounded by a 12,000-acre fish and game reserve and is the perfect setup for activities like volleyball, frisbee, a game of catch, etc. You’ll have to purchase either a day pass for $7 or an annual pass for $22. Last but not least, be aware that the neighboring North Beach Unit is not too keen on nudity, so don’t venture too far!
6.) Baker Beach, San Francisco, CA
Of course San Francisco has a great nude beach, no surprise there! This scenic beach stretches a mile below the rugged cliffs on the Presidio’s western shoreline and boasts incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The original location of Burning Man (1986-1990), Baker Beach has been a long time destination for liberal activities. Attendees tend to be very open with nudity, friendly, and active in the buff!
5.) Black’s Beach, San Diego, CA
Black’s Beach is the largest nude beach in the United States and also a surf spot famous for its winter swells. Access can be difficult since the nude beach is located on a secluded section of beach beneath the bluffs of Torrey Pines. The most popular access point is via the trail from Torrey Pines gliderport. Be aware that landslides can occur, so beachgoers are advised to avoid setting up too close to the cliffs.
4.) San Gregorio Beach, San Mateo County, CA
Yet another California nude beach! San Gregorio Beach is the oldest official nude beach in the U.S. (since 1967). If you’re going to go au natural, be sure to stay in the nude section north of the Hazardous Surf sign to avoid a citation. You can expect 2 miles of soft sand, caves, cliffs and driftwood. And fun fact for ya - the driftwood structures have become common places for sexy time, so if there’s a t-shirt hanging on a pile of driftwood, that’s the local code for “occupied”.
3.) Gunnison Beach, Sandy Hook, NJ
The largest clothing-optional beach on the East Coast, this is one you won’t want to miss if you’re into baring it all. The beach boasts epic views of Brooklyn, and the game changer - alcohol is legal! Sounds like a combination for a crazy good time if you ask us. In 1999, New Jersey passed a law that allows municipalities and counties to prohibit all types of nudism on state or local beaches in their jurisdiction. Gunnison Beach, however, is on land owned and managed by the federal government and therefore is not subject to state or local regulations. As a result, Gunnison became the only legal nude beach in the state.
2.) Kauapea Beach, Kilauea, Kauai, HI
Also known as Secret Beach, this gorgeously scenic Hawaiian beach is one of the best kept secrets in the nudist community. Although you’ll rarely see more than a few sunbathing in the buff, this is the premier location to do so in the Hawaiian islands. Whether you choose to take it off or not, beachgoers can enjoy whale and dolphin watching offshore in the summer, and be sure to ask a local to direct you to the nearby waterfall. However, swimming is not advisable for novices in this area.
1.) Haulover Beach, Bal Harbour, FL
Often reaching the top of internationally recognized nude beach lists, Haulover Beach in Miami is pretty much a constant party with diverse naturalists from all over the world. Thanks to year round warm South Florida weather, winter is just as fun as summer! On National Nude Day in 2013, the public beaches of Miami attempted to break the world record for most skinny dippers at one venue. Although lots of naturalists showed up to play, the record is currently held by The Fig Group in Perth, Australia at 786 skinny dippers.
